Google Says "Email Is Broken"
But They Intend To Fix It
Luke, Brett and Jason headed to an industry event last month to learn more about the newest application for Google...Google Wave. Lars Rasmussen spoke about the benefits of this application and how it will redefine online communication as we know it.
Lars and his brother Jens are not only the co-creators of Google Wave, they are also the brains behind Google Maps. T-bone has successfully applied Maps to a number of fascinating mash-ups and business functions for our clients, such as the development of powerful store locators.
Their ambitious plan was based on the fact that email was invented in the 1960s, before the Internet, before the now ever popular Social Networking sites and before instant messaging. It took the most common form of correspondence at the time, mail, and replicated it electronically.
While email has served us well for many years it has not kept up with the rapid advances in technology. Lars and Jens see Google Wave filling the gap that exists between email, instant messaging and online documents such as Google Docs.
Google Wave is described as a "hosted conversation" allowing people to come in and out of the conversation as required. The application will track the correspondence, making collaboration on tasks, projects or decision making much easier and more efficient.
The most exciting prospect and where Google Wave will be of real interest to our clients is that it has been designed from the outset with a number of simple to use APIs t that will allow it to be seamlessly integrated into other web applications.
This will effectively allow T-bone to leverage Google's technology to incorporate rich communication functionality within the business critical applications that we currently develop for our clients. In the same way that we have made use of the APIs (Application Programming Interface) with Google Maps, Google Wave will allow similar mash-ups and exciting new projects.
Google Wave is currently under development around the corner from our Sydney office and is due for release later this year.
